Church School students learn about early Christianity with a creative curriculum called Road to Rome.

You’re invited to journey back to the early days of Christianity with a special presentation from Grace’s church school students on Sunday, May 20 following both worship services.

4th and 5th grade students, otherwise known as Club 45, will show off the results of their year-long Road to Rome project. Check out their model city of Caesarea on display in Albright Parish Hall and chat with the kids about their learning experience.

This creative and fun curriculum offered the kids a chance to learn about life in the early church and to get to know some of the people — like Paul and his companions — who helped spread Christianity.

The weekly stories and activities encouraged the students to experience the danger and wonder of Christian life in the days when the church was in its infancy. The lessons allowed the kids to reflect on our own culture’s experience with slavery and the ways we experience difficult ethical decisions in our daily lives. The program also invited the students to think about how Christianity is spread today and how they can be Christ-bearers in their own lives.

Thanks to church school teachers Joan & Nick Van Rees, Vicky Striker and Kelly Woodruff for leading the kids on this fabulous journey throughout the year!

Sue Nixon and Sabine McDowell harvested and delivered the veggies in early May. Organizers at the food bank were thrilled to accept the fresh produce. Grace member Barb Woehle has been a volunteer at Circle of Concern for years. Barb greeted Sue and Sabine and took them on a tour of Circle’s facility.

The Creation Care team has plans to plant bush beans, peppers, yellow squash, zucchini, cucumber, basil, tomatoes and lettuce in our gardens this year… all to benefit local food banks.

Thanks to Sue and Sabine for their green thumbs and generous spirits! And thanks to Sabine for sharing these pictures with us.

Lunch begins at Noon on the grounds of Grace Episcopal Church (weather permitting).

Eileen Hacker, winner of one of the Missouri Athletic Club’s Annual Women of Distinction Awards last October, has researched the lives of United States First Ladies and will present a fascinating program on the life of Mamie Eisenhower, including her recipe for fudge (the only dish she knew how to make when she married Ike).

Eileen is a consummate community betterment volunteer who always finds ways to serve others. The 91-year old educator and nurse has initiated public health nursing programs in schools and communities well-ahead of her time. Wherever she and her family lived, she was sought out for her knowledge, experience and desire to forge better lives for the people of the community. Her impressive bio speaks volumes about her talents, education and dedication to the service of others.

Sign up in Albright Parish Hall by May 8 to enjoy this annual picnic box lunch on the grounds of Grace Church (weather permitting) at Noon. A short business meeting, including election of officers for 2012-2013, will proceed Eileen’s program on Mamie Eisenhower.

Please put your $15 check in the Women of Grace mailbox at church or contact Becky Entenmann.

Camp Phoenix is an overnight camp – seven days and six nights of fun and adventure!

Camp takes place at the DuBois Center (2651 Quarry Rd., DuBois, IL), and campers age 8 to 15 participate in camp programs. Campers stay in a cabin-group with approximately six other kids your same age. Make new friends, see old friends again, and try new things together like canoeing, horseback riding, archery, campfires and all-camp games. Camp Phoenix is also a place where you can get to know God better; through daily reflection, spending time in nature, and by “seeking and serving Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself…”

The fee for Camp Phoenix is $325. Scholarships and discounts are available if applied for by May 15. Camp Phoenix is serious about no child being turned away because of lack of money.

Representatives from Camp Phoenix will be at Grace Episcopal Church Sunday, May 6. Be sure to stop by their table in Albright Parish Hall to learn more about the program.

Visit the Camp Phoenix website for more details and registration information.
