Our mission is underway! We pulled out of Grace Church in Kirkwood at about 7:30 a.m. Our three vans were filled with 14 youth, five adults, and lots of sleeping bags, luggage and food. We made our way north, with a pit stop just outside Springfield, IL and lunch in Rockford, IL. We arrived in Beaver Dam at about 3 p.m.

Beaver Dam is a lovely little town of about 16,000 people. We are staying at Trinity Methodist Church, which is a beautiful church and the people are very welcoming. Jeff Culpery greeted us — he is a member of Trinity Church, works with Habitat for Humanity and is also a driver for the Beaverland Must Ski team.

What is the Beaverland Must Ski team, you ask? Beaver Dam sits along a beautiful 14-mile lake (Beaver Dam Lake). Every Sunday evening the town turns out for a water skiing show. The team has about 70 members — some as young as six years old! They practice three times during the week and then host a show for the town every Sunday. At the end of the summer, the team competes in state and national tournaments. Jeff invited us to attend the show last night… it was really fun to be a part of this local tradition.

We have just finished breakfast (at 7:30 a.m.) and are getting ready to leave for our first day on the job site with Habitat for Humanity. It’s a beautiful, sunny day and we’re all looking forward to getting busy.

I’ll post pictures here when I get time… for now, you can see a few pictures on our flickr page here:
