2015 Mission Trip Details
On November 24, 2014
You are invited to be a part of Grace’s 20th Annual Youth Mission Trip! This ministry offers high school students an opportunity for personal growth while serving the needs of others, all under the loving care and guidance of Jesus Christ.
About the trip:
Our next trip is scheduled for June 7 – 13, 2015. We’ll travel to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin to spend the week working with Habitat for Humanity. Our duties will vary, depending on the stage of our assigned project(s). Those duties may include actual house construction, painting, landscaping, pouring sidewalks, and working in a Habitat Re-Store. Every year and every location brings us new opportunities. We’ll be staying at a local Methodist Church.
We also include plenty of time for fun during the week. Trips to nearby amusement parks, miniature golf courses, restaurants and ice cream shops are always on the agenda! The group also engages in daily discussions about our experiences along with worship or prayer services.
About the cost and requirements:
Although the mission trip itself is just one week, our youth ministry lasts throughout the school year. We encourage all students to take advantage of opportunities to explore their faith in worship services and Sunday school classes; to serve their community through outreach events at church, school or other organizations; and to build relationships with each other by attending various social activities throughout the year.
We are putting a new “personal banking” system in place this year to encourage involvement and make sure every student has the opportunity to be a part of our trip. Here’s how it works: each participating student will be asked to pay $250. You can earn credits to reduce your individual cost by participating in church events or community service outside the church. Each hour of activity/service reduces your payment by $10.
Please note: In the past each missioner was asked to pay $150. Under this new system, you can reduce the $250 payment down as far as zero if you are very active. It would only take 10 credits to get back to the $150 payment.
You will be asked to keep track of your credits throughout the year, with a sponsoring adult signing off on your activity. For example: if you serve as an acolyte, you would mark the date and hours of your service and ask the acolyte ministry leader or a clergy person serving with you to sign your sheet. Parents may sign off on worship attendance – but not other activities. Paid jobs do not qualify for credits. Download a credit tracking sheet here: mission trip tracking sheet.
Verbal commitments for the trip are requested by January 15. Tracking sheets must be turned in to Janis Greenbaum by May 1. We will add up your credits and determine your final cost for the trip. Payments will be due by May 15.
We have one mandatory event for all students: Each year our youth host Grace’s “Elegant Italian Dinner.” This year’s event will be Saturday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. This is the major fundraiser for our trip. Students serve as the waiters and waitresses, sell tickets, check coats, play the piano… basically everything except cook the food (parents get to help with that). Last year’s event brought in more than $5,000. It’s a major event and requires everyone’s participation! If you have a conflict with this date, please talk with Fr. Todd, Mike Heyer or Janis Greenbaum.
You’ll find more opportunities to get involved and earn credits in our youth events calendar. Please see Janis Greenbaum in the church office to get a calendar a personal banking tracking sheet. Be sure you are on our email list for weekly and monthly updates from Grace Church to receive updated information throughout the year. If you are worried about losing your tracking sheet, you can keep it in a file in Janis’ office and stop by to update your credits each week.
Please note that scholarships are available to anyone with a financial need. Please speak confidentially with Fr. Todd, Mike Heyer or Janis Greenbaum.
