It’s nearly 11 p.m. and the first day of our mission trip is about to come to a close. We are happily settled into our home for the week at Christ Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Martha Rogers greeted us when we arrived at about 6:30 this evening. She gave us a tour of the church — which is beautiful, spacious and very welcoming. Sabine says I’m very lucky to have such great accommodations for my first mission trip!

After unpacking the vans, we made our way to nearby Ryan’s Buffet for dinner. Everyone ate too much and then we returned to the church. The youth played “sardines” (kind of like hide & seek) and then we had our evening meeting to review duties and plans for tomorrow. We ended with a night prayer from the New Zealand Book of Common Prayer and retired to the basement for some serious card games.

We’re scheduled to meet our contact with Habitat for Humanity tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. for our first day of service. We’re off to a great start… I’m looking forward to a great week!
