youth lock-in (240)More than 20 youth members from several area Episcopal Churches came together for an overnight experience at Christ Church Cathedral Friday, Jan. 10.

Grace members Christian and Alex Davis joined middle school and high school students from the Cathedral, Good Shepherd, and St. Martin’s for this fun event. The evening began with a tour of the Cathedral from Dean Mike Kinman. We climbed into the bell tower to ring the extremely heavy bells, crawled under the piano to find a signature from superstar Billy Joel, had a chance to play the amazing pipe organ and learned a lot about the history of our Cathedral.

After the tour, we enjoyed pizza, basketball and other games in the Cathedral’s gym (yes, the Cathedral has a gymnasium!) and then listened to a presentation from three Deaconess Anne House interns, who told us about their work at the new diocesan mission in North St. Louis.

Late-night activities included hide-and-seek in the darkened sanctuary and a special night prayer service in the Chapel. We went to the fourth floor to bunk down for the night. The youth played cards, played the piano and even sang a few songs while getting ready for sleep. We finally turned the lights out at about 2:30 a.m. We were up again at 7:30 Saturday morning for morning prayer on the roof and a casual breakfast back downstairs.

Thanks to all the youth, parents and youth leaders from the various parishes who participated in this event, especially to Heidi Clark from St. Timothy’s and Miriam Jorgensen from the Cathedral for their organizational efforts.
